PE & Sport Expectations

Curriculum Intent

At Kingsnorth, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that pupils from Reception to Year 6 not only enjoy but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way, which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as tolerance, perseverance, fairness and respect. Our bespoke curriculum also offers online CPD opportunities for all teaching staff to further enhance their abilities.

Our curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives
  • are fully included in all PE lessons.

    Curriculum Implementation

Children are taught regularly by teaching staff from Reception to Year 6. The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area and after school clubs. Play leaders supervise sports activities and personal challenges at lunchtime, including: football, athletics, rugby, netball and crazy catchers. At the beginning of each new academic year there’s opportunities for Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils to train to become Play Leaders, allowing them to offer a range of sporting activities for children to participate at lunchtime. We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow each child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.

PE Lesson Expectations for Teaching Staff
  • Ongoing weekly PE lessons must last at least 1 hour each and 6 lessons within a short term. The 1 hour does not include ‘getting changed’ time. However, this may include showing children any skill videos, questioning or WAGOLL cards.
  • Block week PE must cover a total of 5-6 hours worth of PE within a week to ensure our school is meeting the Chief Medical Officer’s guideline of 2 hours of PE a week. You may may disperse the hours within the week to however works best for you, your children and the school timetable.
  • Where PE lessons are not possible due to extreme weather conditions and not having appropriate indoor space, children should participate in the Steps 2 Summit lessons (Summiteer Skills and Physical Literacy) and participate in the Steps 2 Summit Training Videos as a whole class.
  • If possible, try and catch up the missed lessons during Sports Week and/or other points in the year.
  • Children must not be taken out of PE lessons or excluded due to behaviour and/or interventions.
  • The STEP method (found on TLG-PE) must be used to ensure your PE lessons are fully inclusive and all children are reaching their full potential.
  • Children must have plenty of uninterrupted practice time during the ‘skill development’ stage of the lesson (less teacher talk).
  • Equipment must be checked by teachers prior to teaching and report any missing/faulty/inadequate equipment to the Sports Lead.
  • No Jewellery and/or watches to be worn during PE lessons. Read PE policy for clothing expectations.
  • All lessons should have the Steps 2 Summit Summiteer Skills and the Christian School Values at the heart.

Assessment in PE Expectations for Teaching Staff

  • Assessments in PE using TLG-PE must be taken through lessons where possible to ensure accurate judgements are made and teacher workload is reduced.  All assessments for both ongoing and block week PE lessons must be uploaded on TLG-PE by the end of each short term.
  • Where there are significant gaps in a particular skill or sport as a whole class, you should adjust the planning to ‘Lower Ability’ mode through TLG-PE. This must be confirmed by the Sports Lead before amending. Not all sports have this mode.
  • WAGOLL cards and skill videos should be shared with the children to ensure teaching is accurate.
  • KS2 only – Skill progression cards and WAGOLL cards should be displayed in classrooms for children to access regularly.
  • All CPD can be found on TLG-PE. However, if you are unsure on any aspect of teaching PE, please speak to the Sports Lead.

Physically Active Learning and Steps 2 Summit

  • All children must complete 15 minutes of Step 2 Summit daily. All data must be uploaded to TLG-PE to track least active children as per Government instruction.
  • Where Steps 2 Summit is not possible outside, classes to complete together using the Steps 2 Summit online training videos.
  • Where PE lessons are not possible due to extreme weather conditions and not having appropriate indoor space, children should participate in the Steps 2 Summit lessons (planning on TLG-PE) and participate in the Steps 2 Summit Training Videos as a whole class.
  • Physically active learning should be implemented within most lessons, even if in short bursts. Ideas can be found here- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tARSCzHLF5g
