Welcome Back
We look forward to welcoming the children back for their first day in year 4. We hope you have had a lovely summer break! Please find below some information that we hope you will find useful for this term. Come and talk to us at the door if you have any further questions. We understand that your child will learn much better if they feel happy, liked, respected and safe…and we’ll certainly be doing our best to make sure the children feel valued. If there are any issues, please e-mail us and we will get back to you.
Term 1
Maths - This term, children will build confidence with 4-digit numbers by deepening their understanding of place value, number composition, and efficient addition and subtraction strategies. They will revisit and refine their use of column methods, apply known number facts, and explore numbers to 2,000 in practical contexts such as measures and statistics. Pupils will compare, order, and round 4-digit numbers, and choose the most effective strategies for solving problems. This unit lays strong foundations for future work involving calculation and problem-solving with larger numbers.
A great way to make learning tables fun is by learning them through song and actions. This website gets your children up and moving and will be used for movement breaks throughout the day.

English - In Reading lessons this term we will be reading a brilliant book called Varjak Paw and learning all about how characters change and develop throughout a longer novel.
In Writing, we will be focusing on memoirs. Pupils will learn how to write in a reflective and personal style, recounting events and experiences with clear detail and emotion. They will explore how to organise their writing effectively, use descriptive language to engage the reader, and develop their ideas through planning, drafting, and editing. Throughout the term, pupils will write their own memoir pieces inspired by themes and experiences connected to The Iron Man.
Jigsaw – In PSHE, the children will be learning about ‘Being Me in our World and exploring being part of a team. They talk about attitudes and actions and their effects on the whole class. The children learn about their school and its community, who all the different people are and what their roles are. They will also refresh their understanding of the School Rules and good learning behaviours.
Some key Year 4 messages:
- A timetable will be on the outside of the classroom to share the learning that will take place throughout the week. There is also one on the internal door and a visual timetable on the whiteboard.
- Termly newsletters will be attached below for you to see the term's learning in more detail and will also be sent out via email.
- PE is on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please make sure you come to school in your kit on these days. This term, it is Cricket and Athletics. Children will need appropriate clothing as both lessons are outdoors.
-Don't forget your reading book, reading log and water bottle in your book bag – all really important things for a successful day at school.
-Prioritise practising your times tables, spellings and reading fluency - these are core skills for Year 4 children.
-Homework will be set on a Friday and consists of spellings, a focus times table/maths activity linked to the week's learning and a wider curriculum activity. Spellings will be tested on the following Friday. AR quizzes-

You will need to click on the Accelerated Reader section, not the STAR test section.
- Red book bags should be used rather than rucksacks as per our policy.
