HOME LEARNING:
Homework: revision (CGP books – Maths, Reading and SPaG)
This half-term’s homework is continuing to focus on revision. Please feel free to choose the pages your child works on and go at a pace that suits them. Little and often is usually the most effective approach, helping children build confidence without feeling overwhelmed.
Please also continue with reading and practising timetables on TTRS.
Spelling tests are now every Friday.
MATHS
In Maths, we will return to addition and subtraction. We will also look recognising coins in money and the symbols of pounds and pence. After that we will explore fractions. We will spend time revising and consolidating maths skills and knowledge gained over the year. Please continue to use TT Rockstars and to work through the SAT’s practice book.

ENGLISH
Writing:
|
We will be developing our writing skills in our Writing for Pleasure lessons. We will continue editing and proof-reading our 'chapter book' class projects. Our next project will be to write a class magazine, which we will publish together. |
Similar to last term, handwriting is very important in Year 2 and children will be encouraged to form their letters neatly. Year 2 children will also work on daily spelling tasks.
Attached below is a list of common exception words as well as high-frequency words. We would really appreciate your support in helping your child practise spelling these words so that they are confident in both reading and writing them independently.
We are often asked how you can support your child with writing at home. Here are a few ideas that will support your child in both their creativity and in practising the structure and content of various genres:
- Write a letter or postcard to someone
- Write a shopping list or a wish list
- Write a recipe or instructions on how to do something
- Keep a diary, updating it regularly
- Write a familiar story in your own words, maybe even change some of the elements i.e. character, setting etc.
Reading:
The book we are studying during Power of Reading sessions is “Diary of a Killer Cat”. We ask that you do not read this at home with your child so that it remains fun and engaging and we can make predictions together.
Please continue to listen to your child read daily at home and ask them questions about the story to develop their reading skills. Skills such as prediction and retelling are important along with answering inference questions. Children on AR are encouraged to complete quizzes at home before starting a new book.
The video below will help you to understand how to say each of the sounds from Set 1 to Set 3. It would be really beneficial for you to watch this to support you with your child's learning.

RE:
Who is a Muslim and what do they believe?
In RE this term, we will continue to explore the religion of Islam. We will learn about holy words and celebrations which are important to Muslims. We will also relate this to our own experiences and beliefs and those of the religions we have already learnt.
SCIENCE:
Plants
We will continue to learn about how plants grow. The children will learn about what plants need to grow and to stay healthy. We look forward to growing some plants so that we can observe plant growth over time.
In PE, we follow the TLG scheme of learning. Below is a yearly overview of the topics your child will cover in Year 2.

PE is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Your child can wear their PE kit throughout the day. It would be useful if your child could wear shorts under their tracksuit bottoms as having bare legs helps them to climb and move around the apparatus more easily.
PSHE:
Changing Me
We follow Jigsaw for our PSHE learning. This term we will be focusing on how and why we change as we get older. We will consider what we have already achieved and explore what we are looking forward to in the future.
DT:
We will be looking at and designing windmills. We will look at how windmills move and how to design a flower windmill that has moving parts.
