Welcome back!  We hope you have had a restful and enjoyable summer, we are pleased to see the children back in school.  During the first few weeks, we will be focusing on the children's well-beling and settling back into the normal routines of the day.  We will also be reminding and reinforcing routines and expectations to enable us to all work together, ensuring we are all learning and supporting each other.  We have some exciting areas of learning coming up in Term 1.  Below is a summary.  We look forward to working together with you and your child.

Please also refer to the termly newsletter for further information.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us on the Year 2 email account - year2@kingsnorth.kent.sch.uk.

MATHS

In Maths we will be learning about place value and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.  We will also be learning how to add and subtract using a tens and ones grid.

Children would benefit from regular practising their 10 and 2 times tables.  Apps such as Whiterose, 1-minute maths and games such as 'Hit the Button' will help with their speed recall.

ENGLISH

Writing:

The children will continue with Read, Write Inc. lessons alongside daily writing lessons which are planned through Writing for Pleasure. Our grammar focus is to use capital letters and punctuation. Handwriting is very important in Year 2 and children will be encouraged to form their letters neatly.  In Year 2 children will also work on daily spelling tasks.

Attached below is a list of common exception words as well as high-frequency words. We would really appreciate your support in helping your child practise spelling these words so that they are confident in both reading and writing them independently.

For writing, we will continue to make our own books through 'Writing for Pleasure'. This term, we will be writing Haiku books.

We are often asked how you can support your child with writing at home. Here are a few ideas that will support your child in both their creativity and in practising the structure and content of various genres:

- Write a letter or postcard to someone

- Write a recipe or instructions on how to do something

- Keep a diary, updating it regularly

- Write a familiar story in your own words *maybe even change some of the elements i.e. character, setting etc.

Reading:

We cannot emphasise enough the importance of reading at home. Please listen to your child read regularly and ask them questions about the text. Without the ability to read, children find accessing the curriculum a struggle and we want all our children to access a broad and balanced curriculum.

The video below will help you to understand how to say each of the sounds from Set 1 to Set 3. It would be really beneficial for you to watch this to support you with your child's learning.
