ENGLISH
Writing:
The children will continue with Read, Write Inc. lessons alongside daily Writing lessons which are planned through Writing for Pleasure. Our grammar focus is to use capital letters and punctuation. Handwriting is very important in Year 2 and children will be encouraged to form their letters neatly.
In Year 2 children will also work on daily spelling tasks.
We are often asked how you can support your child with writing at home. Here are a few ideas that will support your child in both their creativity and in practising the structure and content of various genres:
- Write a letter or postcard to someone
- Write a shopping list or a wish list
- Write a recipe or instructions on how to do something
- Keep a diary, updating it regularly
- Write a familiar story in your own words, maybe even change some of the elements i.e. character, setting etc.
Reading:
Please continue to listen to your child read daily at home and ask them questions about the story to develop their reading skills. Skills such as prediction and retelling are important along with answering inference questions. Children on AR are encouraged to complete quizzes at home before starting a new book.
The video below will help you to understand how to say each of the sounds from Set 1 to Set 3. It would be really beneficial for you to watch this to support you with your child's learning.

RE:
Who made the world?
In RE this term our Big Question is ‘Who made the world?’ We will think about the creator of the world and reflect on who the creator is as we explore the world around us. We will be learning about the creation story and what this tells Christians about God.
SCIENCE:
What are the basic needs of animals (including humans)?
We are learning about animals, including humans, this term and will consider their basic needs. This will involve looking at what they need to survive; including exercise, food, shelter and hygiene.
In PE, we follow the TLG scheme of learning. Below is a yearly overview of the topics your child will cover in Year 2.

PE is on Tuesdays and Fridays. Your child can wear their PE kit throughout the day. It would be useful if your child could wear shorts under their tracksuit bottoms as having bare legs helps them to climb and move around the apparatus more easily.
PSHE:
Being Me In My World
We follow Jigsaw for our PSHE learning. This term we will be focusing on being ourselves. We will consider our hopes and fears, our rights and responsibilities and rewards and consequences.
History:
What is the British monarchy?
We will be learning about significant British kings and queens. We will be learning about putting events in time order (chronology).
