Support and resources from public libraries
There are several resources available from public libraries that could complement the educational resources schools provide to parents, particularly to support reading for pleasure.
- Librariesathome.co.uk, includes a tool to help individuals find their local library service. Library services have made it quicker and easier to sign up online, so that families and individuals can start to use digital library services (e.g., borrowing eBooks), and in many areas open the door to accessing physical books via order and collect or similar arrangements. This site also allows individuals to watch LibrariesTV, which features many videos produced by library services across the country. These include activities like storytimes and craft sessions. It also features podcasts and blogs providing ideas for further reading and much more.
- Libraries Connected is an organisation that represents library services across the country and provides further resources via #LibrariesFromHome (through the website and on Twitter). They also signpost to interesting activities and virtual events.
- The National Shelf Service offers book recommendations from professional librarians who signpost to great titles available through libraries and eBook lending platforms.
National Virtual Library
Oak National Academy has launched a new virtual library in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.
The Virtual School Library hosts free reading and writing content from children’s authors such as Dame Jacqueline Wilson, Josh Lacey and Konnie Huq. There is a free-to-access book every week from the platform’s author of the week, alongside exclusive videos and the authors top three recommended reads.
