At Kingsnorth CEP School, our main aims within music are:
Knowledge, Skills & Understanding – This is structured across three main areas, highlighted below:
- Controlling sounds through singing and playing – performance
- Creating and developing musical ideas – composing skills
- Responding and reviewing – appraising skills
- Listening and applying knowledge and understanding
To ensure there is breadth of study for Music, the children have the opportunity to work with ICT, listen to a range of live and recorded music from all around the world and they also have the chance to work in groups, pairs or on their own.
As well as music that is taught systematically in classrooms across the school, pupils enjoy the opportunity to sing daily as part of collective worship. For Early Years, singing is part of the daily curriculum as music is used to strengthen other learning such as Maths and English.
Year 2 children write and perform a special annual assembly to celebrate Harvest. In addition, our Year 4 children put on a pantomime each year and have to learn songs and simple dances to support the production and the Year 6 children stage a leavers’ production in the final term of their time in primary school. This is a full show where music becomes embedded as part of a much wider process of producing a musical performance of which the children can be rightly proud.
The children have the opportunity to learn the ukulele throughout Year 2 and the recorder in Year 3. We have plans to extend this to drumming and guitar opportunities later in their primary career.
The school also runs a choir, which is held on a Monday afternoon and currently run by Miss Ciantar and Miss Pryke. Through the choir we have had many successful links with the community, including Waitrose, Tesco, Park View Care Home, and charities including Pilgrim's Hospice, Demelza House and Teddington Trust. We look forward to another busy Christmas season this year!
